Located on the banks of Ewaso Ng’iro River in North Kenya in the North of Laikipia, Samburu national reserve is a unique wildlife destination famously known for its “Special five animal species” which are the reticulated giraffe, Grevy’s zebra, Besia oryx, Somali ostrich and the Gerenuk. Samburu national reserve is the most popular destination in Northern Kenya.
Located across the Equator in North Kenya in Samburu district spanning over an area of about 165 square kilometers.Samburu is part of a distinct ecosystem which also includes Shaba national reserve and Buffalo springs to the South of the Ewas Ng’iro River.
The Ewaso Ng’iro River, south of the national reserve is a major player in Samburu’s ecosystem as it is the lifeline of the reserve that is located in a semi-arid region. The river provides the best wildlife sightings within the reserve especially during the dry season.
It is home to a unique set of Northern Kenya species which include the grevy’s zebra, reticulated giraffe, besia oryx, gerenuk and Somali ostrich.
It is also home to a rich diverse wildlife including 4 of the members of the African big 5; the lion, buffalo, elephant and the leopard and hundreds of different bird species, over 450 species.
Samburu national reserve is also home to the famous Samburu people of Kenya. They along side the Samburu local council protect and preserve the reserve. You can visit a Samburu village while on safari in the reserve on a guided cultural tour.
